Level Up: How to Get Ready for Leadership Roles

August 27, 2025

You’ve likely mastered many aspects of your current role as an office manager. But if you’re eyeing higher-level positions, it’s time to start preparing for the next step in your career. Moving up to roles such as Operations Manager, Director of Administration, or even Chief Operating Officer requires a strategic approach to skill development, networking, and self-assessment.

Begin by assessing the skills and experiences you currently have. What strengths have you developed in your role as an office manager? Perhaps you excel at team leadership, project management, or financial oversight. These are crucial skills, but higher-level roles will require you to broaden your expertise. For example, you might need to enhance your understanding of strategic planning, advanced financial management, or organizational development. Identify the gaps in your current skill set and make a plan to address them, whether through formal education, online courses, or hands-on experience in your current job.

Networking is another key component of preparing for higher-level roles. Building relationships with leaders in your organization and industry can open doors to new opportunities and provide you with valuable insights into what it takes to succeed at the next level. Attend industry conferences, join professional associations, and seek out mentors who can guide you as you navigate your career progression. These connections can also serve as references when you’re ready to apply for a more senior position.

It’s also important to take on additional responsibilities that align with higher-level roles. Volunteer to lead cross-departmental projects, get involved in strategic planning sessions, or offer to mentor junior staff members. These experiences will not only enhance your resume but also demonstrate your readiness to handle more complex and broader responsibilities.

Self-assessment is a critical part of this process. Regularly reflect on your progress and be honest about areas where you need further development. Seek feedback from your peers, supervisors, or mentors to gain different perspectives on your performance and potential. Use this feedback to refine your approach and continue building the skills and experience needed for higher-level roles.

Finally, stay informed about industry trends and developments. Higher-level roles often require a deep understanding of the broader business environment, including emerging technologies, regulatory changes, and market dynamics. By staying current, you’ll be better equipped to contribute to strategic decision-making and demonstrate your value as a leader.

Preparing for higher-level roles is a journey that requires dedication, continuous learning, and strategic thinking. By focusing on skill development, expanding your network, taking on new challenges, and staying informed, you’ll be well on your way to advancing your career and stepping into the leadership roles you aspire to.
